This course covers the process of and tools used in evaluating health data using analytical and logical reasoning to examine each data component.
HIHIM 407: Foundations for Health Care Vocabularies
This course focuses on health concepts, documentation, health care taxonomies and clinical vocabularies, terminologies, classifications and nomenclatures required for health data analysis, clinical coding and clinical systems associated with the electronic health record.
HIHIM 408: Management Concepts with HIM Applications
This course covers management principles from a health information management perspective and core management functions of planning, organizing, staffing, delegating, leading and controlling; theories of management, both traditional and contemporary; leadership concepts in HIM; change management; human resource management; employment law; performance management and HIM organizational structure.
HIHIM 409: Disease Concepts for Managers
This course teaches students to develop a methodology for understanding and communicating dimensions of disease states as well as all health states that a person might experience. The course presents clear, effective ways to describe the diversity of health conditions and focuses on disease from a health information systems perspective.

HIHIM 410: Foundations in Health Information Management
This course focuses on the basics of health information through study of the creation and maintenance of health records, access to and retention of health information, accreditation, licensure and professional standards in acute care hospitals and alternate care facilities.
HIHIM 411: Health Data Management
This course addresses the governance and management of health care data through exploration of data assets and linking the assets to standards and quality.
HIHIM 414: ICD, Clinical Documentation & Revenue Management
This course features an in-depth study of ICD code sets for diagnosis and procedure coding, clinical documentation to support ICD code assignment, and reimbursement methodologies that use the ICD code set to determine payment models.

HIHIM 415: CPT/HCPCS, Clinical Documentation & Revenue Management
This course offers an in-depth study of CPT/HCPCS code sets for procedure coding, clinical documentation to support CPT/HCPCS code assignment, and reimbursement methodologies that use the CPT/HCPCS code sets to determine payment models.

HIHIM 420: Health Care Computer Systems & Electronic Health Records
This course covers current health information systems and the role of health informatics; technology infrastructure and health informatics standards; electronic health records and related definitions, functions, issues and barriers; and hospitals, ambulatory care, home health and long-term care and computer applications.

HIHIM 421: Health Information Systems Analysis
This course examines lifestyle systems development process and tools, project management and team coordination, analysis of health information systems, and user requirements.

HIHIM 425: Research Design & Statistics for HIHIM
This course introduces students to health care and research statistics. We'll address hospital statistics, which are used to calculate usage levels of health care resources and outcomes of clinical operations; and research statistics, which are used to summarize and describe significant characteristics of a data set. You'll learn to make inferences about a population based on data collected from a sample. We'll also explore research principles, including the Institutional Review Board process.
HIHIM 450: Health Care Delivery & Policy
This course addresses the organization of health care services across the spectrum of health care delivery systems – both governmental (federal, state and local) and private. We'll also explore the financing of health care services and related policy issues.
HIHIM 454: Finance Concepts for Health Care Managers
This course covers financial concepts applied to today's health care environment, along with financial management tools and budgeting.
HIHIM 455: Leadership & Strategic Management
This course focuses on leadership and strategic management for enterprise-wide health information and information governance initiatives; evaluates organizational ethics and culture for situations impacting HIM and health informatics; and analyzes individual interpersonal skills and professional and personal goals.
HIHIM 456: Quality Improvement in Health Care
This course focuses on quality improvement, risk management and utilization management; management of quality improvement systems; use of data systems in quality assurance; and health data retrieval, analysis and presentation.
HIHIM 460: HIHIM Professional Pathways
This course gives HIHIM students a practice-based extension of curriculum concepts. It covers the systems and issues present in various health informatics and information management settings in the community through seminars and site experience.

HIHIM 461: Professional Development & Networking
This course addresses the professional portfolio and mentoring, along with preparation for the national credentialing examination to become a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
HIHIM 462: Capstone Project
This course explores applied management through the completion of a formal capstone project in a health care setting.

This course examines principles of law as applied to the health field, with reference to health information management.
HIHIM 480: HIM Operations & Project Management
This course provides the key tools and experiences for health informatics and information management professionals in the daily functions of a HIM department, and for controlling the activities of a health care project.
